Steve Tedesco of St. Margaret Mary Parish in Cedar Park is married to Jennie and they have six adult children. Retired from IBM, he is currently the maintenance supervisor for the parish. As a child, Tedesco felt a special call to give attention and love to other children and the elderly. About 20 years ago, he encountered a mentor, Warren Hass, who inspired him to do the work of God in his life. In 2010, he believes God more directly called him to the diaconate, but also discerned that it was God’s wish for him to wait and focus on his family. In 2012, he applied to be a candidate, and although there were twists and turns in the application process, he experienced a sense of peace and joy. Balancing the requirements of formation with his family life and job were challenging, but with God’s help and his family’s encouragement, he persevered. Tedesco describes the greatest reward of formation as letting go of the person he thought he was and allowing himself to be reconfigured into the servant Jesus calls him to be. “The Holy Spirit gives me courage to enter into places where I was once uncomfortable. Encountering and physically touching those I might have avoided before changed my heart,” Tedesco said. Grateful to his wife, family and parish for their support and encouragement, Tedesco also believes his mother and father, who passed away during his time of formation, continue to support him in prayer. As a deacon, he looks forward to ministering to those who are lost or confused, the sick, and the dying. “The truth and love of Christ needs to be given to all. That’s what God wants me to do,” Tedesco said.
